Fun with a bouncy-ball @1000FPS

This is an entirely non-research related post - I purchased a giant, fluid-and-sparkly-filled bouncy ball at Walmart. The poor fellow was sitting alone on a clearance aisle, no pricetag, and it seemed to be the last of its kind. It is precisely what I went in to get. In the clip, you can see it deform vertically about 25-30% (!) as it hits the ground from about 4 feet.

In research news, I'm waiting for a few more parts to come in from Mouser and Newark before the autopilot will be completely integrated into the airframe. The autopilot is working (the board boots) and my airframe and radio configuration files are essentially complete. More later.

A 60 watt lightbulb (one of many, many spares that I had lying around after upgrading the house to CLFs) shot with an air rifle. Note how the filament stays burning for a while after the glass shatters. The articles to the left are a phonebook and a pillow to absorb the impact of the projectile. Yes, I wore ear and eye protection during this test.



As a bonus, you can also see the 60Hz oscillation of the alternating current causing the lamp to "throb" before it is hit.

1/60th-second Camera shutter at 1000FPS

The camera shutter in operation on my Canon EOS 50D DSLR. The shutter is set to run at 1/60th of a second. You can see the shutter flip up, followed by the curtain opening, exposing the sensor, closing, followed by the shutter dropping. When the shutter pops open, you can see it bounce a small amount - this shutter bounce can affect picture clarity. Which is why the camera offers a picture mode in which the shutter flips open on the first shutter button press. The second shutter button press then causes the picture to be taken by using electronic exposure only. Despite this, you can see that most of the vibrations of the shutter end well before the curtain opens.

UPDATE:Added sound! Recorded another shutter actuation at 96,000Hz sample rate, then extended it. The pitch isn't accurate - it's been adjusted to a different ratio than the speed vs the time dilation, but it sounds better that way.

Meditation

The area paper, at least the first round, is finished! In the meantime, here's a clip of falling water at 420 and 1000FPS for your own personal meditation and/or relaxation. The source of the water is from a kitchen sink sprayer. This somewhat accelerates the water, so keep in mind that what you're seeing is faster than normal gravity-accelerated water.

Notice how the water at the edges is pulled in by cohesive forces. However, the inertia of the water causes some of the water to pinch off into droplets rather than join the flow at the center near the bottom.

I have made considerable progress on the paper. I'm still setting a deadline for tomorrow, but I have already nearly completed most of the background materials. The rest should come together pretty quickly. So, to celebrate, here's a 1000FPS clip of an Oral B Complete Care toothbrush. Clip was run through Adobe Premiere for some unsharp masking, autolevels and transforms. Enjoy!



Surprisingly, the bristles seem hardly to deflect at all - meaning that they are quite stiff. At this slowed down speed, their lack of deflection seems normal, but think about it - it's oscillating 33.3 times faster than what you see - you'd expect at least some change. Only the plaque removers (yellow) seem to flop around much. You can even see the effect of gravity on them - they stay down for longer than they stay up, on either side! Always fun to see how gravity works the same at all timescales.

Food processor @420FPS

The next video in the continuing series on slow-mo clips: A tool many of us use, but which moves too fast to see - the food processor. Using red bell pepper pieces, for contrast. Shot at 420 frames per second, it's slow enough for your brain to understand what's going on, and fast enough to allow for some improved resolution over the 1000 FPS mode. The music is... ironic, I dunno. Three pepper pieces are dropped in. This will probably be one of the last slow-mo video posts this week - I will be focusing heavily on finishing my area paper, and revising a journal paper. In the meantime, if you have ideas for things you want to see slowed down, upto 1000 frames per second (roughly 33 times slower than real life), leave 'em in the comments!
